Making Birdseed Ornaments

“Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.” – Henry Van Dyke

Making Birdseed Ornaments

Use adult supervision for hot water. Making these gets messy! This recipe is from wiki.com.

You will need the following equipment:

J  2 bowls

J  measuring cup

J  large spoon for mixing

J  dowel or wooden spoon to make hole

J  twine or ribbon for hanging

J  towels for cleaning up

J  non-stick cooking spray

J  waxed paper

J  cookie cutters

What are the ingredients?

3 tablespoons light corn syrup

1 cup flour

1 package unflavored gelatin

4 cups bird seed(each holds 2 cups)

1/2 cup hot tap water

What are the step by step instructions:

Step 1: Flour and birdseed mixed

1. Mix flour and bird seed together in a large bowl.

Step 2: Gelatin, corn syrup and hot tap water mixed

2.    The water should be hot to the touch. It does not need to be boiling. The water out of your faucet may be hot enough to use. If not, microwave it in a microwaveable container just until hot. This will probably take 20 seconds or so.Always have an adult help you with hot water. Stir in the gelatin and the corn syrup until dissolved.

Step 3. Stirring the gelatin and birdseed mixtures together

3. Pour the gelatin mixture slowly into the birdseed/flour mix, stirring with a large spoon.  It will form a sticky mixture that may clump into a ball.

Step 4.  Nonstick cooking spray and cookie cutters

4.  Spray the inside of your cookie cutters with nonstick cooking spray to keep the birdseed mixture from sticking to them. You can spray your hands with a little bit, too, if you like. The mixture will stick to your fingers.

Step 5: Making a flat pancake of birdseed mix

5. There are 2 ways you can make your ornaments. If you like, you can make a flat “pancake” of the birdseed mix and cut your ornaments out with the cookie cutters. Put the mixture onto a piece of wax paper and flatten it with a spatula or use your hands.

Make the “pancake” about 1/2 inch thick

Filling the cookie cutter

You can fill the cookie cutters by hand. This is a bit messier but still fun!

If you made the birdseed pancake, cut out the ornaments.

Cut out the birdseed “cookies”

6. After the ornaments are filled or cut out of the pancake, and before you take them out of the cookie cutter, make a hole in the center so that you can hang them up. It is easier to make the hole if you wait for the birdseed mix to get harder.  For me, this works after about an hour.

7. Tie a string through the hole and your birdseed ornaments are ready for hanging.

READY FOR THE BIRDS!

Hope you enjoyed making these. I am sure the birds will enjoy them even more! Send me a picture of yours if you like.

Have a great week and see you next Monday for another fun Make It Monday activity.
